In this Q&A, creative services operations specialist Alba Diaz and TSG support coordinator John Sias reflect on the transformative impact of joining the Familia at Bain affinity group. They share how being part of this community has supported their professional development and fostered a deeper sense of belonging within Bain.

You joined Familia at Bain, our diverse community for Bain professionals with Hispanic, Latino/a/x, Chicano/a, Latin American, and Afro-Latino heritage. Why was it important for you to join this affinity group?

Alba:

I was born and raised in Venezuela, a country rich in culture and history but also one that has faced many adversities. Leaving home and coming to this country alone has been challenging and transformative, profoundly shaping my identity and values. Keeping the sense of community and morals my parents taught me has been very important to navigating the challenges of welcoming a new culture, language, and ways of living.

Joining Familia at Bain has been a significant and gratifying experience. It has helped me connect with other peers with similar backgrounds, contributing to the ongoing efforts to foster inclusivity and help others on similar journeys, providing guidance and encouragement that has been vital to my own experience.

John:

Born in Mexico and transplanted into a big city like Dallas, Texas, as a child, I experienced culture shock, not to mention the challenge of learning a different language. Knowing that Bain & Company champions inclusivity and diversity, I opted to join the Familia at Bain affinity group. This allowed me to feel a sense of belonging to a group within my place of work.

It’s important to find other individuals within Bain that possibly share the same life story as mine, like the same foods, and have experienced what I have.

How has Familia at Bain supported you during your Bain journey?

Alba:

Familia at Bain has helped me connect with others with similar values, heritage, and points of view. By honoring and celebrating Hispanic communities' rich history and culture, they highlight the unique perspective we bring to the table as Hispanic professionals. I am always reminded of the importance of embracing our diverse backgrounds and the power of unity in building a better future for all.

Hispanic Heritage Month holds special significance for me. It’s a time to reflect and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities to this country. It’s a reaffirmation of my values and identity, and it keeps me true to myself, hoping to inspire others. I am very proud to be part of this vibrant community.

John:

Familia at Bain has helped me with building a positive working rapport in almost every department I have had the pleasure of supporting. I can communicate with high-level executives that are part of Familia at Bain without feeling intimidated or “lesser than” and instead feel the love, respect, and appreciation from all Bainies.

Three years in, affinity groups such as Familia at Bain have helped me grow and thrive both professionally and personally. I’ve been in the workforce now for 30 years and have never experienced such an exceptional company that values its people. I am a Bainie for life.
