Hospitals across the country have suffered an economic toll from the elimination of nonemergency care. Now with the rate of new Covid-19 cases dropping, they are planning to restart regular patient care. But in Bain & Company’s latest survey of frontline healthcare workers and other clinicians, nearly 60% report their organizations are not yet equipped to manage the return to elective care. The two most commonly cited barriers to successfully managing the return to elective care were a lack of provider and patient testing and an insufficient supply of personal protective equipment. Management of patient volume and social-distancing policies were also cited as obstacles to resuming elective procedures.
