Choi, a 38-year-old woman who earned her PhD at a national university outside of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, was working for a university research institute when she got married. Her mother took care of her first child, so she had no problem at work. Giving birth to her second child, however, marked the very beginning of her “childrearing war”: Her mother got sick and could not raise the newborn; sending the first child to one of the child care centers around her place was not an option, either, as they already had too many children on their waiting lists. She had no choice but to quit her job two years ago.
