The feeling in the tech sector right now is that we're somewhat below expectations in dealmaking, and certainly below the boom times of 2021 and the first half of 2022.

“The fundamental pressures on the industry in terms of valuation and sellers' expectations are still real,” says Chris Perry, a coleader of Bain's Private Equity practice and Telecommunications, Media, and Technology practice.

While a few big-ticket deals have raised hopes of a full recovery, the question remains when the industry will return to normative levels—or what normative will even look like in 2025. In the meantime, investors are adapting.

“I think it’s more important than ever to take a balanced view between growth and profitability,” says David Lipman, a coleader of Bain’s Private Equity practice and Telecommunications, Media, and Technology practice.

Today on Dry Powder, I'll ask Chris and David about the current state of the tech sector. We’ll explore when the dam on dealmaking may finally break, how leading investors are shifting their strategies from growth to profitable growth, and whether generative AI could light a fire under the industry.
