About Bain
We are committed to the responsible use of artificial intelligence, both with our clients and within our organization.
AI presents a transformational opportunity for organizations across industries, including our own. It has the power to shape our future and completely change how we think about and do business.
This opportunity, however, comes with new and amplified risks and legal, ethical, and reputational implications that cannot be ignored—particularly as the growth of generative AI raises the stakes. There are genuine concerns about ethics, bias, data privacy, and job loss, as well as technical challenges around the accuracy of results and the safety of AI systems. And the pace of technology change makes it paramount to put safeguards in place to harness innovation.
Getting the highest potential value from AI requires an approach that connects ethical principles, grounded in the values of society, to technical execution. We believe that winners will harness the transformative power of AI technologies with responsible AI (RAI) embedded across the enterprise.
We aim to be a leader in responsible AI, both in how we support our clients and in how we operate as a firm. As AI evolves, we will continue to refine and improve our approach via reinforcing design principles, a robust risk management infrastructure, and augmented governance mechanisms that ensure the right guidance and oversight are in place.
AI should produce outputs that reliably match intended purposes and ensure security against misuse and attack.
Use of AI should be transparent, and outputs and processes should be explainable and contestable.
Use of AI should treat all people fairly, defend against bias, and prevent harm.
AI systems and their use should respect privacy as well as data and property ownership rights.
Use of AI should respect and protect human rights, human agency, society, and the environment.
AI should have human oversight and accountability, and adhere to relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
Ensure human awareness and judgment, with a clear human escalation path for decision making.
Assess AI readiness based on your organization’s capabilities and the level of risk in planned uses. Tailor your approach accordingly, using what already exists in your organization when possible.
Be explicit about responsible AI goals, build supporting capabilities, and demonstrate the ability to meet stakeholders’ goals.
Use a flexible test-and-learn approach to adapt to changing innovation, regulation, and public sentiment.
Acknowledge that AI is evolving and complex. Take a measured approach and continuously pressure-test to avoid unintended consequences.
Our responsible AI program will be collectively led by a group of senior leaders across our global offices.
