The logo (★) of Macy’s, the U.S. largest department store with 850 stores in the domestic market, has changed: QR code is now at the center of the star. Tagging a phone to the QR code introduces customers to less-than-one-minute-long videos of celebrities such as Donald Trump, Jessica Simpson, Bobbi Brown and Martha Stewart describing what kinds of clothes will be popular this summer and what they recommend. This is a promotion idea called “Backstage pass” that Macy’s showcased to target mobile-friendly customers in February last year. The recommended products are offered only in Macy’s. The Macy’s with 150 years of long history is evolving. Breaking with the outdated atmosphere of its main store in Herald Square, the department store franchise, now equipped with the state-of-the art IT, is attracting visitors.
