Bain’s Product, Practice & Knowledge (PPK) team recently faced off in a high-energy, 1-hour AI Challenge, where teams raced to tackle real-world problems using advanced AI tools. Learn the key takeaways from winning teams in London, India, Chicago, and Mexico City on harnessing AI to automate tasks, enhance collaboration, and foster innovative problem-solving.

London: Choose the right tool for each task

In London, Senior Knowledge Manager Ken Vernick and Knowledge Lead Sarah Meteke found success by using a combination of Sage and ChatGPT, depending on the task. “We used Sage for internal knowledge and ChatGPT for external insights,” Ken explained. The challenge required the team to quickly assess the problem and decide which tool would deliver the best solution, mirroring real-world scenarios at Bain.

“This challenge required us to think creatively about the best AI tool to solve specific problems, illustrating how there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer with AI,” Ken added. The London team’s experience reinforced that choosing the right tool is just as important as using it effectively.

India: Automate tasks to focus on strategy

India’s day 1 challenge winners, Yudhan Anand and Yashwi Singh, quickly discovered the potential of AI to automate routine tasks. Yudhan, a Knowledge Associate in the communications, media, and entertainment practice, explained how they used Sage to streamline their workflow. “Sage stood out as the star tool for us during the challenge,” he said. The internal AI tool delivered fast, accurate insights, allowing the team to focus on strategic decisions instead of manual tasks.

Yashwi, a Knowledge Specialist in the marketing and customer experience practice, emphasized how AI transformed their approach to work. “Through this challenge, we discovered significant potential in leveraging AI to automate our daily tasks, freeing up space for more cognitive thinking and better decision making,” she said. With AI driving routine tasks, the team unlocked more time for strategy and breakthrough thinking.

India’s day 2 challenge winners, Vikramaditya Jalota and Muskaan Datta, succeeded by adapting quickly to surprise rounds and collaborating effectively under pressure. Their combination of AI tools—Sage for insights, ChatGPT Enterprise for content generation, and GetSmart for quick access to critical information—enabled them to automate routine tasks and find innovative solutions.

For Vikramaditya, a Junior Knowledge Associate, the challenge was equally exciting and rewarding. “I gained a new understanding of how AI can streamline and enhance various tasks—many of which I hadn’t fully realized before the challenge.”

Chicago: Harness collaboration and iteration

In Chicago, teamwork and iteration proved to be winning strategies. Senior Knowledge Manager Anna Baldwin shared how she and her teammate, Kosi Browne, divided tasks based on their strengths, which helped them maximize efficiency. “We divided and conquered, each gravitating toward what we could do fastest,” Anna explained. This approach allowed them to move swiftly through the challenge and leverage AI efficiently.

Kosi, a Senior Knowledge Specialist, echoed the value of iterative problem-solving. “We kept iterating on our prompts and adapting our approach to get the results we needed,” he said. Their success shows that collaboration and continuous iteration, paired with the smart use of AI, can drive efficient problem-solving under pressure.

Mexico City: Rethink problem-solving with AI

In Mexico City, Diego Castellanos and Jose Maria Renero took the opportunity to experiment and push the limits of their AI tools. Diego, a Knowledge Lead in advanced analytics, shared how Bain’s proprietary AI tools, like Sage and GetSmart, helped them approach unfamiliar topics.  “We were able to quickly ramp up on unfamiliar topics by tapping into Bain’s knowledge base,” he said. This ability to leverage AI tools to fill in knowledge gaps helped the team tackle complex problems from new angles.

Jose, a Senior Knowledge Specialist in advanced manufacturing & services, added, “The challenge pushed us to consider how AI could transform the way we approach complex tasks.” Their takeaway? AI isn’t just about speed—it’s a tool that sparks creativity and opens new possibilities.

The PPK 1-Hour AI Challenge showcased how AI can transform the way we work at Bain. From streamlining tasks to fostering innovation and collaboration, the lessons learned from this challenge are already shaping how teams integrate AI into their daily operations.
